ABOUT ABOUT

The Chatham Players is honored to begin its 92nd season with Tony Kushner’s acclaimed play, “Angels in America, Part 1: Millennium Approaches” running October 11 -26, 2013 at the Chatham Playhouse.

When “Angels in America” premiered in 1990, it quickly became a catalytic theatrical event. Newsweek called it “the most ambitious American play of our time” and The New York Times called it a “a searching and radical rethinking of American political drama.” Its scope is huge, covering the AIDS epidemic, America’s shift to the political right, as well as grand themes of faith, loss, and identity. But at the same time it is heartbreakingly intimate, with indelible characters – gay and straight, black and white, Mormon and Jewish.  This play received its world premiere in 1992 at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles. The play debuted on Broadway in 1993 and was awarded the Tony Award for Best Play. The play was made into an HBO film and mini-series in 2003. The movie was the most watched movie in 2003 and won both the Golden Globe and Emmy for best Miniseries.

Comprised of actors from all around New Jersey, this bright and bold bunch includes Richard Colonna from Garwood as Roy Cohn, Scott Tyler from Morristown as Joe Pitt, Morgan Vasquez from Parsippany as Harper Pitt, Gus Ibranyi from Bloomfield as Prior Walter, Sal Navarro from West New York as Louis Ironson, Doug McLaughlin from Hillsborough as Belize, Rosemary Wall from Mountain Lakes as Hannah Pitt, Sarah Pharaon from Maplewood as The Angel, John Saul from Secaucus and Chip Prestera from Stirling as Ensemble.

Leading the artistic team is Director Bob Pridham, who is directing his thirteenth play at the Chatham Playhouse, Bob Pridham is a writer, teacher and director. Since 1975, he has been the chair of Kent Place School’s award-winning theatre program. He was named best director by NJACT for Chatham Players’ 2009 production of The Graduate.
